These issues affect all countries and require close and coordinated international cooperation. In this context, the countries of Central Asia, including the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Kazakhstan, as important regional partners, play a significant role in ensuring sustainable development and environmental protection.

On April 21 of this year, a meeting was held in Astana between the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state and future prospects of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction with the high level of strategic cooperation.

In recent years, trade turnover between the two countries has increased significantly, reaching 1.2 billion USD in 2025. This demonstrates the expansion of economic ties. Special attention was given to the development of industry, transport, logistics, agriculture, and investment. At the same time, digitalization, innovation, and modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, were identified as priority areas for future cooperation.

Alongside economic development, issues of security and regional stability were also discussed. Strengthening military and technical cooperation and combating threats such as terrorism and extremism were highlighted as key priorities.

Cooperation also extends to cultural and humanitarian fields, including education, science, culture, and arts, contributing to mutual understanding and friendship.

Tajikistan’s participation in the regional environmental forum titled “A Shared Vision for a Sustainable Future,” held in Astana, is of particular importance. Key issues such as climate change, water scarcity, ecosystem degradation, and natural disasters were discussed.

At the exhibition, Tajikistan’s pavilion showcased national achievements in environmental protection, including glacier preservation, biodiversity conservation, green economy, and ecotourism.

Tajikistan plays a key role in regional water security, as about 60% of Central Asia’s water resources originate in its territory. However, glacier melting poses serious risks.

Additionally, dust storms have become a serious environmental challenge.

President Emomali Rahmon emphasized Tajikistan’s active participation in global water and climate initiatives, including the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development.”

The establishment of a Regional Glacier Monitoring Center in Dushanbe is an important step in environmental research.

The transition to a green economy, development of renewable energy, and attraction of green investments are key priorities.

Efforts to protect biodiversity include conservation programs for rare species such as the snow leopard, markhor, and argali sheep.

A regional waste management center in Dushanbe is also planned.

At the end of the forum, a joint declaration and a regional action program for 2026–2030 were adopted.

The cooperation between Tajikistan and Kazakhstan demonstrates readiness to address global challenges and ensure a sustainable future.

Hakimov Zoirjon Ruziboevich
Deputy Director for International Relations
Technical College of the Tajik Technical University named after Academician M.
